On joining Coupang

Long before joining Coupang, Karthik Dondapati had his eye on the U.S. technology company, intrigued by its “customer-first” philosophy.

One job opportunity at Coupang’s Mountain View, Calif., office, particularly stood out: “The chance to work on a mission-critical system that could scale to billions of products and millions of customers,” said Karthik, whose work includes building custom landing pages for the company’s e-commerce operations“The challenge of integrating real-time machine learning models at that scale was exactly the kind of meaningful, high-impact work I was looking for.”

Six years later, after joining Coupang in 2020, Karthik has fulfilled that ambition by inventing a patented approach to improving the customer shopping experience, helping ensure the company’s interactions with customers are even more relevant and meaningful.

“I knew that collaborating with experienced engineers from around the world would not only push my technical abilities,” he said, “but also sharpen my leadership and communication skills.”

On the lightbulb moment

Karthik’s approach to invention emphasizes reflection and simplification. During a moment of quiet analysis at work, he spotted an opportunity to make the customer experience better. He envisioned a system where every customer shopping on Coupang would receive their own customized landing page, with preferences and items uniquely relevant to them. A lightbulb went off.

Karthik began working with Coupang’s product and science teams to create the process. His role centered on designing and scaling data pipelines that powered the landing page system and building infrastructure flexible enough to support different categories and user groups while still operating at scale. That included ensuring the system could update thousands of segments and process billions of records daily.

The end product resulted in a new Coupang patent called “Computerized Systems and Methods for Generating Customizable Landing Web Pages.” Karthik says the experience reshaped how he views innovation.

“True innovation isn’t always about building something entirely new. Often it comes from stepping back, looking critically at what already exists, and finding a cleaner, smarter solution,” he said. “That lightbulb moment reinforced a principle I carry with me in every project: improvement and elegance, even in small steps, can have enormous impact.”

On work, life and balance

Karthik believes in cultivating a mindset of exploration, learning from mistakes, and taking risks. In his view, failures aren’t the end – they’re an important part of growth.

“Trust the journey, embrace challenges, and focus on building skills, curiosity, and resilience,” he said, “because those are what shape your long-term path and allow you to create meaningful impact.”

Outside the office, Karthik says his world revolves around his wife, Pranathi, and their golden retriever, Asher. Much of their time together centers on their shared passion for hiking, beach trips and wonderful food.

“I even tell my wife that I don’t have the brain space for trivial clutter such as video games, extra apps, or mental noise,” he said. “By stripping away the unnecessary, I create room for the ideas and connections that truly matter.”
