Coupang: A global leader in technology innovation

In a global economy driven by innovation, Coupang, the U.S.-based global ecommerce and technology company, has built a strong leadership position in the digital services industry.

Coupang has invested billions of dollars in its global end-to-end logistics and fulfillment infrastructure — integrating automation technology, custom robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) — to drive rapid growth. Founded in 2010, Coupang today ranks 142nd in the Fortune 500, generates more than $34 billion in annual revenue and serves more than 24 million active customers in 190 countries around the world, including the U.S., South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

One of the company’s core goals is to leverage technology and innovation to eliminate traditional trade-offs in commercial operations – speed vs. cost, quality vs. convenience – and build systems that deliver the best of all worlds to customers, business partners and the communities it serves.

These innovations also help serve as a bridge between the U.S. and its trading partners like Korea by driving commerce across global economies. Thousands of U.S. companies reach new customers in markets around the world through Coupang, driving billions of dollars in sales of American products and agriculture to global customers each year — more than $5 billion worth in 2025 alone.

“At Coupang, we’re working every day to reimagine the future of commerce and expand the global reach of U.S. exports to new customers in new markets,” said Coupang Chief Global Affairs Officer Robert Porter. “Coming up with new and better ideas and tools to achieve these goals — in a word, innovation — is the number one way we add value for all those we serve.”

Automation drives efficiency, quality and safety

Automation technology enables Coupang to deliver orders with extreme speed and reliability. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) bring hundreds of items to warehouse pickers at their workstations in a single trip, reducing physical demands on employees and reducing their total workload by approximately 65%. Ergonomically designed sorting robots scan addresses on the waybill and sort orders by delivery area in just a few seconds, while driverless forklifts automatically store and retrieve pallets containing high-volume products.

Coupang’s collaborative systems, in which humans and machines learn to work together, enables the company to achieve unprecedented levels of speed, quality, efficiency and consistency, while making jobs easier and safer for workers and creating new jobs as a result of increased capacity.

AI-powered management systems

Underpinning the complex choreography between workers and robots is an AI-powered management system, which coordinates operations from the moment a customer places an order to the moment that order is delivered to their doorstep.

Within seconds of a customer’s order, an AI-enabled system generates the unique, optimized path each item will follow. AI coordinates tasks for fulfillment center employees and delivery drivers using real-time data. And the system predicts future demand for individual items to stock inventory, ensuring a seamless customer experience even during peak shopping cycles.

Such efficiency is possible in part because Coupang owns every part of its logistics and fulfillment network end-to-end, allowing the company to analyze, optimize, innovate and invest in improving every step of the process.

Innovation drives environmental sustainability

Coupang is also leveraging innovative technologies to drive environmental sustainability across all its systems:

The company built an integrated EV logistics center for its EV delivery fleet with a goal of achieving zero-emissions operation. The center includes a ceiling charging system for trucks as well as other customized EV facilities.

Coupang minimizes environmental impact through data-driven packaging systems that optimize packaging size, reducing materials and waste. In 2024, nearly 85% of global shipments were sent without extra box packaging, and one in five products were shipped in their original manufacturer packaging through a Shipping in Own Container (SIOC) model.

Through the use of Eco-fresh cooling bags, Coupang eliminated an estimated 61,000 tons of polystyrene in 2024, and wider use of polybag packaging reduced global cardboard consumption by about 100,000 tons. Together, these innovations make operations cleaner, more efficient and better for the planet one package at a time.

AI investments and collaboration

Coupang is taking multiple steps to accelerate its investments and leadership in the development and deployment of AI-powered systems across industries.

The company announced at NVIDIA’s AI Conference & Expo conference in March 2026 that its partnership with NVIDIA has helped Coupang create an “AI factory” which is accelerating new innovations across the company’s e-commerce logistics and delivery services. The collaboration leverages the Coupang Intelligent Cloud (CIC) system, launched in July 2025, and NVIDIA hardware to create a self-service AI ecosystem that allows engineers and other data experts to test and build new models quickly across Coupang’s global organization.

Also in March 2026, SBVA, a major venture capital firm that counts Coupang among its financial supporters, announced a €30 million ($34.9 million USD) commitment in the seed round of AMI (Advanced Machine Intelligence), a global frontier AI lab founded by Meta’s former chief artificial intelligence scientist Yann LeCun. AMI is working on world models, which learn from reality rather than language. The venture will be staffed by leading researchers and engineers from U.S. tech companies including Meta and Google DeepMind, along with other globally renowned technology organizations.

Industry-wide recognition

Coupang was named to LexisNexis’s 2026 Top 100 list of global innovators for the second year in a row in 2026. According to LexisNexis, inclusion on the Top 100 list reflects the measurable improvement in Coupang’s patent portfolio over the past two years, and appearing on the list for two years in a row highlights the company’s growing innovation momentum.

“Coupang’s second consecutive appearance on the Top 100 Global Innovators list reflects a patent portfolio that encompasses breadth across technologies and depth in quality,” said Marco Richter, Senior Director of IP Analytics and Strategy for LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions. “Coupang’s patent assets show that the company prioritizes intellectual property as a core strategic driver in the business, an approach which pays dividends in strengthening the business for continued success.”

The company was also included on Fast Company’s 2025 list of the world’s most innovative companies, ranking second in the retail category. The editors highlighted Coupang as a “one-stop” e-commerce powerhouse and praised the company’s sophisticated use of AI, robotics and machine learning. Specifically, it noted how the company’s systems make trillions of predictions daily to optimize everything from search results to the exact order and location of bin-packing, product-picking and vehicle-loading in fulfillment centers to maximize delivery speed and efficiency.

Coupang’s innovation and patent program has been steadily growing in recent years:

  • The cumulative number of patents issued to Coupang worldwide has risen from 91 in 2015 to 3,919 in 2025, an average annual growth rate of 45%.
  • Coupang has been issued 354 patents in the U.S. alone.
  • The number of employee inventors named in Coupang patent filings reached an all-time high of 736 in 2025.

The future of commerce for all

Technology and innovation drive every aspect of the Coupang experience, creating new moments of “wow” for customers every day. The company continues to innovate and invest in better solutions for customers, employees, business partners and communities — eliminating trade-offs and working to build a world in which everyone wonders, “How did I ever live without Coupang?”
