From complex problems to patented solutions 

Based at Coupang’s Mountain View, Calif., office, data scientist Xumeng Lam is part of Coupang’s growing community of U.S.-based innovators, and her technical creativity is helping build proprietary technology and patented breakthroughs for the company. Xumeng specifically develops systems that help the company optimize its marketing operations. 

Turning questions into scalable solutions 

Coupang’s leadership wanted to better understand the real impact of its marketing channels and how it could help the company better serve customers. Xumeng built a process that analyzes Coupang’s marketing ecosystem and quantifies the impact of each channel. The process is unique because it is fully data-driven and automated. The solution is also highly customized and operates at multiple levels, enabling teams across the company to act with precision. “It’s both a measurement tool and a decision-making tool,” she said. 

To create it, Xumeng combined advanced modeling with real-world A/B testing. By using controlled experiments as a benchmark, she refined the model to better reflect behavior. The result is a hybrid approach that blends statistical rigor with practical validation, an example of the inventive thinking that fuels innovation across Coupang. 

A foundation built on curiosity 

Xumeng’s path to innovation started early. As a child, she discovered a natural strength in math, an interest that grew into a lifelong passion for analytical problem-solving. She earned a PhD in applied math and statistics from Johns Hopkins University and began her career as a marketing statistician, well before “data scientist” was a common title. She has continued to evolve her expertise, applying it to increasingly complex and impactful challenges. 

Nearly five years ago, she joined Coupang, drawn by the opportunity to work on meaningful problems and raise her children in Northern California, where her family could be outdoors enjoying hiking, biking, and the local ecosystem to fuel her kids’ fascination with the region’s plants, flowers and insects. 

Recharging to stay creative 

Outside of work, Xumeng finds inspiration in California’s natural landscape, spending weekends exploring the outdoors with her family. “It helps me reset and recharge,” she said. That balance, between deep technical work and time to step away, continues to fuel the creativity behind Xumeng’s innovations.
