Attending a new school is hard on any child, but doing so in a new country halfway across the world was an even greater challenge.
“My little one had a really tough time starting her new school,” said Jennifer Kim, Coupang’s Retail Fashion Director. “Every morning when we were putting her on a school bus here, she would bang on the door, crying.”
Jennifer had moved to Korea to start her new job at Coupang. Her two daughters arrived a few months later, while her husband remained in the U.S.
As a working mom, Jennifer did her best to balance work with raising her kids alone, away from her husband and parents. But one day, Jennifer received photos from her younger daughter’s teacher that broke her heart.
“I noticed that [my daughter] was the only one not in a ballet dress. Everybody was in these really cute pink ballet tutus, and then my daughter was just in t-shirts and pants. I felt awful looking at these pictures.”
Distraught, Jennifer checked Coupang that evening and found a pink tutu in her daughter’s size. With Coupang’s Dawn Delivery service, the tutu was delivered the very next morning, as she was leaving for work, she found a delivery box by her doorstep.
“I opened it and the tutu dress was in there. I just felt so happy that it came that day, I wasn’t expecting it,” said Jennifer. “And so I gave it to her, and she was so happy; it was the first day that she didn’t cry going to school because she couldn’t wait to show her friends.”
Later that day, Jennifer received pictures of her beaming daughter in her new dress with her classmates. The teacher told Jennifer that her daughter had been proudly telling everybody, “I have the same! I have the same!”
“That day was probably one of the happiest days that I’ve had here as a mom, and as somebody who works at Coupang,” said Jennifer. “We were able to delight somebody, a customer, and that day, it happened to be me.”
