How to turn your hobby into a business with Coupang

Hoe-yeon Kim is the CEO of Charrondel, a do-it-yourself (DIY) accessory brand. Hoe-yeon’s hobby was to make accessories, and eventually, she decided to try her hand at selling them. She put in a very small investment of one million won (around 825 dollars) into her company, and then signed up as a seller on Coupang Marketplace.

“At first, I had zero sales. Zero!” said Hoe-yeon. “However, Coupang recommends products based on keywords to customers when they search for something themselves. Because of these systems, items that customers search for get exposure, even if they are not famous brands.”

One by one, Hoe-yeon found herself getting orders from interested customers, and soon, she even had to hire employees to keep up with demand. “Thanks to the growth of the business on Coupang, I now have seven employees,” said Hoe-yeon. From an initial start-up cost of one million won, she is now making up to 30 million won (nearly 25,000 dollars) each month.

Hoe-yeon said, “It is no exaggeration to say that my life has done a 180 after I joined Coupang.”
