Coupang Named One of the “Most Innovative Companies of 2025”

Named a Top 100 Global Innovator by LexisNexis

Coupang was also named one of the “Top 100 Global Innovators for 2025” by LexisNexis, a global data analytics firm.

Each year, LexisNexis identifies the 100 most innovative companies across various industries ranked by the strength of their patent portfolio. This year, Coupang was selected as one of the 12 leading companies in the global IT sector. The firm noted that Coupang’s patent portfolio is more than four times stronger than the industry average, highlighting the company’s rapid growth in both technology and patent strength. This recognition is backed by ongoing investment in R&D and patent filings.

Coupang has filed patents in countries including the U.S., South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Europe, supported by a company-wide commitment to enabling its global workforce to focus on innovation. As of the first half of 2024, Coupang had registered over 2,100 patents globally—a more than 13-fold increase from just 160 patents in 2019.

Coupang’s Evolving Logistics and Delivery System Powered by AI and Robotics

Coupang delivers millions of items—including fresh groceries—nationwide in just a matter of hours. The secret lies in its highly automated logistics and delivery system, which is driven by cutting-edge robotics and a proprietary fulfillment infrastructure.

Coupang’s fulfillment centers are equipped with intelligent robots, including unmanned forklifts, AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), and depalletizing robots. AGVs navigate by reading barcodes on the floor and can transport hundreds of items to workstations in under two minutes. Depalletizing robots handle irregularly shaped and heavy items—like sacks of rice—and move them safely into the packaging process.

These smart robots are equipped with 3D sensors that detect not only their surroundings but also the slightest movements of nearby employees, helping to ensure safety during operations. Thanks to AGVs, fulfillment center employees have decreased the amount of carrying and transporting products themselves, resulting in an estimated 100% reduction in physical workload. 

Automation plays a key role in Coupang’s packaging and delivery processes as well.

For example, the Auto Sorter System automatically sorts packages by delivery region. Once an employee places a packaged item onto a sorting robot, the robot instantly reads the shipping label and directs the package to the appropriate destination based on the delivery area.

At Coupang’s delivery camps, PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) are used to assign optimized workloads to employees. The system analyzes real-time data—such as the volume of incoming parcels and the number of employees available at the facility—and distributes tasks accordingly. The results are displayed on each employee’s PDA. When employees need to move around the large logistics center, the PDA even guides them along the most efficient route.

For delivery drivers, Coupang provides the Rocket Delivery App (RDA), which offers real-time information and the most efficient delivery routes to ensure fast, accurate service.

Coupang has also developed a system to respond to surges in order volume: the Logistics Center Availability Tracking System.

This system calculates, in real time, the number of staff present at each logistics center and the volume of orders that can be handled. It identifies the maximum capacity each center can process per day and, if the assigned orders exceed that limit, the system automatically reallocates some of the volume to other nearby centers.

In addition, the system includes features such as order optimization, delivery promise tracking, and inventory similarity analysis across logistics centers. This enables us to deliver on time, consistently and efficiently.
