Jung-hee Kim is a loving wife and proud mother of three sons. She is also deaf. She works at the Yeoju Fulfillment Center, where she provides packaging support for deliveries.
As someone with a hearing impairment, Jung-hee wasn’t sure what to expect when she applied to Coupang in 2018. Discrimination had been a common refrain in her previous workplaces, where she often found herself underpaid and overworked. Jung-hee simply endured these conditions in order to support her family, until a friend, who is also deaf, encouraged her to apply to Coupang.
While Jung-hee was initially drawn to the higher pay and quality of work, what struck her was the fact that Coupang didn’t treat her differently from other employees. “I wasn’t discriminated against for what I did, who I was, or what I made. We’re all treated equally here, and I really like that.”
Jung-hee did face some challenges at first, such as communication with her colleagues. However, she was determined and worked together with her team to overcome the communication gap. “My coworkers taught me by writing things out, while I taught them simple sign language. ‘Have you eaten yet,’ ‘hello,’ ‘I’m happy’—things like that.”
Now, Jung-hee is happy to work at a job that fulfills her and makes her feel important. “I enjoy working here. It’s safe and stable, and I’m truly satisfied with what I do for a living. It’s a five-star job.”
Best of all, Jung-hee has more time to spend with her family. “Here, work ends at 6 o’clock sharp,” she said. “I love that I can prepare fresh dinners for my family. My son rushes to get home and empties every dish—watching him do so is my biggest joy.”
“My family brings me joy,” Jung-hee said. “Coupang brings me joy, too.”
